Resume Advice - The importance of getting it right
Published on 10 Dec 2016
When preparing your resume your number one goal is to make sure it is read and not put in the rubbish without being looked at. It needs to stand out in the right way.
It is not bold colours, fancy fonts, odd sized paper or images inserted throughout your resume that is important in getting noticed. What is important is being simple, easy to follow and straight to the point. You are trying to make the recruiter/employer’s job as easy as possible to choose you for the job.
Pimping your resume format is not going to get you on the right side of the line, it will put you in the ‘no’ pile very quickly. It is fundamental that your resume format is simple and easy to read.
The best format is to use dot points, a clean and clear format, black text on a white background in a traditional Word document.
Once your resume is neat and clean, with a succinct story of your education and career experience to date, you then need to prepare a simple cover letter. Follow the same principles as your resume to tell your story.
The other tip that is very, very important – check and double check for any spelling mistakes. It is always a good idea to ask someone to proofread your resume, a fresh set of eyes often picks up small mistakes that you may have overlooked.
